The Nomadic Experiment Landscape project, or NEL for short is a proposal driven by the reconceptualization of the opportunity for redeveloping the back lot of at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Where creativity meets spontaneity; Where responsivity meets reactivity; Where playful interaction meets experimentation; Where learning meets leisure; Where activity meets nurturing; Where nomadic migration meets gesturally inviting landscapes; and finally, where flexible design meets a seemingly adverse environment to produce a completely unexpected and ephemeral experience for CCA and the community. Leveraging the emerging practice of interim-use design to activate the vacant lot behind California College of the Arts’ San Francisco campus, The NEL Project offers users a new occupiable ground condition. The triangulated scaffolding system sits above portions of the site that are otherwise deemed too toxic for occupation. Now, new programmatic opportunities as well as bioremediation of the polluted site can take place. Small studios and leisurely gathers along with larger exhibitions and shows can be facilitated by a new temporal landscape for the CCA community and surrounding neighborhood.
